What is Medicare?
Medicare is a federal health care program designed for people ages 65 and over. Most U.S. citizens earn the right to enroll in Medicare by working and paying taxes for at least 10 years. Under certain circumstances, people under 65 may also be eligible. There are four parts of Medicare related to specific services:
- Part A — Hospital coverage
- Part B — Medical coverage
- Part C — Medicare Advantage Plans (offered by private insurers like Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas, contracting with the government)
- Part D — Prescription drug coverage
